The Westmoreland Glass Company was established in 1889, and initially produced bottles to store condiments as well as cream pitchers, goblets, tumblers, and other glass novelties.

This also included vinegar, baking powder, mustard, and glass items containing candy during the First World War.

It was originally located in East Liverpool, Ohio, before being purchased from the Specialty Glass Company, and moving to Grapeville/Jeanette, Pennsylvania.

The location was chosen because the property had a large source of natural gas which was used to heat the kilns.

In 1924, the company manufactured glass lights, containers, knobs, and vases.

It became known for its distinctive milk glasses in the late 1940s, which was sold in mid-scale department stores across the nation.

The introduction of plastics for food and drink containers started a long decline in domestic glass production in the late-1950’s.

By the mid-1960s, the company shifted from the production of milk glass,
with a nearly opaque whitish glass, to colored glass because of a declining market for milk glass.

Westmoreland Glass declared bankruptcy in the early 1980's.

In 2017, a fire occured.

David Grossman bought it in 1981, used it for tax write offs, rode it into the ground and then shuttered it. Ask anyone who worked there during that time.

My father worked there when I was a kid. I remember when it shut down. I knew what it was just by seeing the thumbnail photo. Amazing how familiar it all looks. My father, my aunt, and my uncle all worked there.

R there piles of glass cullets or broken pieces in the factory? Saw what looked like piles of uranium glass in your video. What is safest & easiest way to get into factory? How far in did u have to go into factory to find piles of glass? Am a glass lover especially the abandoned glass in factories & around them. Live close to factory & wanted some info before going on treasure hunt in there. Probably best to wear boots & long pants. Any suggestions
