Meet local musician and performer Ronnie Malley, the star of "Ziryab, the Songbird of Andalusia" at Silk Road Rising. Ronnie discusses a brief history of the oud, an instrument which made its way from Iraq to Cordoba, Spain via Ziryab, a former slave who rose to extraordinary fame in the court of Abdar-Rahman II. Ziryab opened one of the world's first music conservatories and added a fifth string to the oud, the grandfather to the guitar.
Music is a gateway to learning about a culture and its people. Did you know that Dick Dale's famous song "Misirlou," from the film "Pulp Fiction," is a traditional Middle Eastern song? Watch to learn more.
"Ziryab, the Songbird of Andalusia" is written and performed by Ronnie Malley, and runs from February 18 - February 28, 2016 at Silk Road Rising. Learn more and buy tickets at: www.silkroadrising.org
