For anyone, like me, wondering who that backing vocalist is. Phoebe on Zane Lowe:
"I was just thinking about my hometown, and I was thinking about reoccurring nightmares I have on tour. So on “Garden Song,” my tour manager sings with me. He’s 6-foot-7. He’s a Dutch man named Jeroen [Vrijhoef]. I realized he had the voice of an angel when he was singing Mitski with me in the van and he was two octaves below me, and I was like, “You sound like a Dutch Matt Berninger from the National.”

This is my interpretation of the song/video:
- Demons/people in the video meaning: I think the video represents her nightmares/trauma/people stuck in your brain. When you're dealing with processing things from your past, it feels like they're just these little head demons getting in your way, reminding you of things from the past (like how the one guy hands her a box and she sees it and cries).
- Garden imagery: When you feel hopeless and stuck in the past I found that dreaming of a future safe place where trauma can turn into hope and new growth (like a garden) is really inspirational, which is a reoccuring theme in Phoebe's lyrics (I buried a hatchet
, It's coming up lavender from Smoke Signals). Turning something bad into new life and beauty.
- "The doctor put her hands over my liver, she told me my resentment is getting smaller" --> path to recovery, therapy, processing etc.
- "I have everything I've wanted" --> Technically life now is safe and good but it still is haunting because you haven't healed from the past, current depression despite everything looking good in your life.
