Jordan Peterson | Full interview | VPRO Documentary (2019)

This interview was not conducted to be a stand-alone interview, it was conducted for a Dutch documentary about male/female-dynamics in Canada. Within this documentary, we explored how an event like the Toronto van attack could happen in Canada and how Canadians are trying to heal from it. More broadly, we looked at misogyny and violence against women within Canada, and what it is about contemporary feminism that makes some men angry or lost. We also paid attention to men suffering from violence that their female partners had inflicted upon them. As prominent Canadian voices, we included both Margaret Atwood and Jordan Peterson.

Psychology professor Jordan Peterson has become a controversial figure ever since speaking out against Bill C-16 (2016), a law which adds gender expression and gender identity to the Canadian Human Rights Act. He has received both praise and criticism after the publication of his self-help book 12 Rules for Life: An Antidote to Chaos (2018). His fans are thankful for the advice heā€™s given them to take responsibility for their lives, his critics argue that his emphasis on the danger posed by ā€˜postmodern neo-marxistsā€™ is dangerous in itself. He has been accused of being anti-feminist and feeding into the alt-right. While he gained support among people who do identify with the alt-right, he himself does not.

Peterson has become an important inspiration for various menā€™s groups, an influential voice. Therefore, we wanted to get clear where he stands on contemporary feminism and how he interprets the van attack, which took place in the city he lives in. Since the documentary episode only allowed for brief passages from the interview, while Petersonā€™s answers are extensive, we decided to provide the entire interview.

We talked to Peterson on the 4th of June 2019, in Toronto, Ontario. Since there were some breaks (for adjusting the camera and for having coffee) during the interview, it consists of multiple takes. Apart from leaving out the breaks themselves and making the transition between breaks more fluent, no further editing has been done.

As a woman, I have NEVER felt like whatever he says disregards, opresses or insults me. He is a beacon of common sense. <3

I AM A WOMAN. I love this man. So DO NOT even try to say that ā€œwomen feelā€ any type of way towards what he says, because you do not speak for us, lady. He has inspired me for the past three years with his videos and speeches.

This man has literally saved my life. I was 17, diagnosed with anxiety disorder, severe depression, ptsd, destructive habits, no father, a mother working all day, helping to raise a younger sister, high school drop out, getting in trouble with the police, somehow came across one of his videos and I havenā€™t stopped listening to him ever since. He has his college lectures on physiology on YouTube and they have opened my frame of reference to what I was going through and how life actually could be different with hard work, dedication, and self awareness. my life has ever since took a turn for the better in all areas. I continued my search for knowledge on truth, reality, and logic and Itā€™s because of this man that I have been able to start my journey. No words could express my gratitude for this man and his family as it takes a village. Now at 22 Iā€™m able to finally see the light of seriously being the woman I could have only dreamed of when he introduced the idea of creating a heaven for yourself. seriously this man saved my life and Iā€™m constantly reminded every time I look at statistics and just how many of them Iā€™m going against.

This woman is not listening. I am a woman. I am a feminist. NOTHING he is saying is offensive to me. He speaks sense. I applaud you Jordan. Thank you for standing up to ridiculousness.

JP was quite ill when he recorded this interview, yet he comes across as more humane than ever. One of the most positively influential people on the planet.

Watching this in 2022, and realizing this was pre Covid, pre us riots, pre Russia, pre lockdowns and supply chain issues, it really strikes me how much we shouldā€™ve listened to this man more

"It's not OK to be a man. It's necessary. What the hell would we do without men?" I'm a woman and I endorse this message. :D

I am a woman and have found JP to be extremely enlightening! I love how honest he is, and that he doesn't let journalists/interviewers push him around! Also he has a great handle on the Bible, the interviewer clearly doesn't understand it, but Jordan is bang on as usual.

This man should get a knighthood for virtually singlehandedly standing up for common sense in these sad times.

These questions were designed to torture Jordan into telling lies and he didn't budge. His mental fortitude and composure absolutely blows me away, answering every challenge with absolute clarity and concision while these vile creatures are trying to blacken his soul under the guise of equality and compassion.

This man, unbeknown to others, was fighting illness and snide attacks on his family, still shines through. He is without doubt an intelligence to be reckoned with, still remains honest and true. What a difference from what is normally paraded out before us. He's a gem

I woke up in the middle of the night to this man shooting facts like a verbal machine gun. Iā€™m quite fascinated and intrigued by all that he said.
