Melanie I treat insomnia in my therapy clinics daily, and actually evidence tells us that if you lie in bed awake for more than 15 mins, then you disrupt the association between sleep and bed, and instead your brain associates your bed with something more negative. I'd strongly suggest if you can't fall asleep after 15 to 20 mins, get up and do something soothing like listening to calm music. You can return to your bed once you are absolutely sure you can't keep your eyes open

While I think it's really helpful to have all the stats available with a fitbit, I also think that these things are so contextual. Right now, you might need that sleep more than the time for yourself, other times you might rely on alone time to keep yourself right. I don't think it's a straightforward equation of how to set up your routine. It's just a juggle of your needs each day and for that, I think it's super important that you're in touch with how you feel that specific day in which case a fitbit might give you an idea but it's definitely not something to rely on imo.
This was a super interesting video and I love the format! XO

In my experience, the most important variable in getting good sleep is relying on natural light and dim, warm diffused lights (not overhead, just lamps) in the evening. I recommend salt lamps. They emit cozy diffused pink light and I love them! I think the second most important variable is arranging your sleep schedule around the sunset and sunrise as best you can. So for me that means I go to bed earlier in the winter and later in the spring/summer. Lately the sun has been setting around 4:30 and since I don't use my overhead lights (just salt lamp, candles, and at this time of year some warm Christmas lights that I hung on the celing), my house is very dark and cozy starting around 6pm, which is when I begin my wind down routine of cleaning the kitchen, then cozying up on the couch with my dog and laptop and planning my next day. Then at like 7 I get in bed and watch videos until I fall asleep around 8. I turn the brightness down and just listen usually.
As the days get longer my bed time gets later and toward the summer months when it's too hot and bright to sleep at 8 I go to bed much later and wake up earlier since the sun rises early. During this time of year I feel like the nights are too short and I'm often still tired when I wake up, but I have to get up and get to work because by like 12-2pm it starts to get uncomfortably hot in my house, but that's when I'll rest...either just laying on the couch or taking a nap til it starts to cool down and I can get back to work. This is what I have been doing for years and I swear by it! I get sick a lot less now. I don't have kids yet so I imagine I'll have to tweak some of my lifestyle habits in the future but for now it's really great for me.

I’m one of those mental guys that wakes up silly early. I fall asleep when I put the kids to bed at 7. I then wake up at 3:30 for breakfast, at work at 5am. Finish at 1, gym for an hour - pick the kids up from school at 3. Do dinner - rinse and repeat.

I REALLY enjoyed making this video ... cannot even tell you how fun I find this format, it was a really fun edit so please let me know if you like stuff filmed this way (over time rather than just sitting still chatting to camera) as I'd love to add in the odd challenge video in this style to mix things up a bit! Also THANK YOU SO, SO MUCH for all the love on my last video! Twice in two months the YouTube algorithm Gods have blessed me by pushing my vids out to loads of people lol after nearly a decade as a creator it never gets old when that happens. WOOOOOO xxx
