Backdoor cold fronts happen all the time on the Northeastern US. They can happen anytime of the year but they mainly occur in the late winter or spring months, where land masses are warming up much more quickly than the Atlantic. So when there is any wind shift to the SE, E, or NE in the spring months, the chilly Atlantic will have a major impact over the coastal Northeastern states.
