This song would not be so universally loved if it weren't full of Truth. We get into marriages and other relationships and people check out and stop contributing. We have to stay in the relationship with love and forgiveness to carry people while they are weak. But how long can you stay when your partner is only giving you hurt? You can feel Bono's anguish in the lyrics and the tones of his voice. He has lived this.

Just the line “But were not the same” really sealed this song as one of the all time greats. So simple but so true. The message of this song is that for all we share, we’re different.
