My summers in high school were spent working at a zoo. My last summer there, 1978, our only African lion and the only African lion I have ever known, Leo, passed away at the ripe old age of 28. Basically he was an overgrown and extremely playful kitten and my friend. He was fond of wandering around the zoo after hours rubbing up against the employees and chasing butterflies. After a necropsy we held a memorial service where we placed his body on a bamboo pyre and we all said words, 42 employees and about a hundred regular zoo members. Then we lit the pyre and sang this song, nearly 150 of us as the forty foot flames crackled and licked the blackened night sky our voices reverberating against the forty foot high granite face of the main building. To this day I still miss his thunderous roar and the lick of his tongue on the back of my hand and the expression on his face when he saw his friends first thing in the morning.

This brings a great memory from my youth. I went to a punk rock gig in the late 80's where Black Flag, Circle Jerks and Dead Kennedy's played that night. After an insane evening we all piled into a VW van to head home. While driving home fully exhausted this song came on the radio. Literally everyone sat up and we all sang this song. It was awesome!
