Halsey on Losing Herself to Find Herself Again. 2017

One of Halsey's key artistic traits is the candor that drives both her music and her relationship with her audience. Whether the subject is politics or romance, the singer behind "Ghost," "Colors" and "New Americana" always cuts to the chase, unearthing emotions that are often brushed aside by others. Her new 'hopeless fountain kingdom' album was written and recorded in the wake of a breakup, the "misadventure" of star-crossed lovers as she reveals in album's "Prologue." Halsey recently performed the songs for the first time ever at our Vevo Presents show in LA, and in our exclusive interview she sat down with Kim Taylor Bennett to elaborate on their origins, plot twists, and meanings. Along the way she explained how Baz Luhrmann's 'Romeo + Juliet' helped her shape the narrative, how she crafted the traits of her lovers Luna and Solace, and how she had to come to grips with herself when her ex was no longer in the daily picture. Big questions and intriguing options sprouted immediately, and she tells Bennett all about them. "When I'm making a record, I want my fans to know the characters and know the story," she says. "It's kind of liberating, being so honest. Because it keeps me being honest with myself."

"The songs are not about him...the songs are about me and that's the most important part..." I LOVE HER

Halsey is polarizing and misunderstood. People either love her or hate her. She keeps it real and if anything at all, you'll get an honest response or answer from her. That's why I'm a fan of her.

The fact i'm watching this in 2021 after Halsey had her baby and she's finally happy just strikes harder. I'm so glad she was able to find what she wanted cause that woman deserve the whole world for herself

“woman of color” doesn’t just mean ur physical appearance, it refers to your ethnicity as well. she’s half black regardless of whether or not she’s white passing. she knows she’s white passing and acknowledges the privileges that come with it all the time, and she uses her privilege for good. but disregarding her race completely just because she’s white passing is ignorant in itself. she has the right to connect and embrace the other part of her race as well.

That's just amazing how I felt during all her interview. I had the great impression of knowing her, as if she was a friend of mine, as if we were sitting next to each other talking. She's such an inspiration, and even if she's this "celebrity" she stays humble, herself, lovely and true to herself and everybody around. That's just perfect, I could listen her for hours and never getting bored! :*

"You've been replaced, I'm face to face with someone new" I always thought she referring to another partner, but in reality she is referring to herself. To the person she has become after the break up, hopefully someone stronger. Halsey really is such an inspiration and her explaining the songs aren't about her lover, has completely changed my perspective on this album. I can't wait to listen to it again and re-evaluate it.

This is probably the best interview about an album I've ever watched... Her album is so well written and so much meaning behind it

It's interesting when an artist talks about how the album was created, as it gives us the chance to follow your line of reasoning and thus understand the way the songs were created and how they will affect you. Hopeless Fountain Kingdom is an incredible album and the more I know the stories behind their songs, the more Halsey becomes incredible to me.

I asked my parents if I could go to one of her concerts, they said no “we don’t like the things that she talks about” she is describing what she went through. Yes, she talks about sex on the album but she is saying what she did to please them so that they would be happy. So that they wouldn’t criticize her. This is why Halsey is important, she describes what it is like to go through things and what she did to get out of them.

This is why we love her, you can always feel the authenticity in her, she doesn't hide or twist who is she in front of the world, she is just being herself and honestly if any one of you doesn't like that just because she's acting like a bitch or snake, you can definitely get the fuck out. Real fans understand her and will stay.

I honestly totally relate to Halsey. I remember when my past relationship ended I didn't really know who I was without them.
