We had a judge here (london canada) who used to get a bit tipsy and race his carriage around the streets.until he was given a ticket (or whatever they called it back then). The next day at court, he fined himself $5, took the money out of one pocket, put it into the other, and carried on with court business.

Ulysses was actually his real middle name, not "S." When he applied to military school, they got it wrong and replied to him under a completely wrong name. And rather than correcting the name, they said essentially "You can still come to our school, but you have to be Ulysses S Grant to do it." So he legally changed his name for that.
