"I was in my eighties at the time." First time I ever heard that sentence.

I think his criticism of Gould is that Gould was trying to be different for the sake of being different, rather than due to some sound musical reasoning for that difference.

I think what Seymour is saying is that if you call a certain composition a colour , for example blue , then in performance there can be many different shades of blue . What you cannot or shouldn’t do is turn the colour blue into red.

"You would deprive your students of that, because you're bored?" A true teacher, honestly. Passion for teaching is about watching your knowledge go to someone younger, who can use it to potentially go farther than yourself. We as a species are very unique - we can teach a lot of information very quickly. Self taught may seem cool - but you miss out on shortcuts and understandings that could have been told to you rather than spending precious time trying to figure out.

"You want to hear and see-more.... get it?" That was hilarious.

One HAS to love this man- his mind, his heart, his soul, his humour- in brief: his beautiful humanity- I am referring to Seymour Bernstein, of course.

"So this is psychologically induced by his mother." Gosh, I love Seymour.

I love this dialogue. I don't specifically take one side or the other, but I admire Bernstein's deep experience and passion for music. It's a breath of fresh air.

It is ironic how people defend Glenn Gould against any criticism because they are opposed to institutionalized thinking.

I support Seymour Bernstein 100% on this. From Interviews it's clear that Glenn Gould really don't respect or like Mozart. When I first tried to find a good recording of the Bach Goldberg Variations, I could not understand the praise Glenn Gould got.I thought his recording was a misrepresentation of the beauty I saw was there.

I love to hear Seymour, his integrity, his calmness, his clarity. I tend to prefer his opinion, he is a profound man and cares about the child who hear for the first time the moonlight sonata with the right tempo.

This is fantastic! I have to learn as much as possible from this man... There is always truth to be gained from great art, and music is perhaps the most communal form of art there is. Thank you for having Seymour as a guest!

"Snide". That's the word I've been looking for all these years. Please hurry and get part two up. PS. In fairness, I have to say I love GG's Sweelinck from the Salzburg recital.

Seymour Bernstein gave me a masterclass at the Brooklyn Coservatory of Music on Kreisleriana. I was a young teenager then. I am now a Doctor of Music from Manhattan School of Music. I am so grateful for what he taught me. I'm also grateful for the chocolate he gave.

Thank you so much for pursuing this work! This is an important musicological history that also asks philosophical questions that all musicians should think about.

I played the Mozart Sonata as a piano student. Don't really like Gould's take but I respect his musicality. Seymour is a legend. And he is correct - many of Gould's interpretations are traditionally questionable. Even Arrogant. But they are also daring and imaginative. Ultimately it is the listener who decides.

If I composed such pieces, I would want others to bring their own passion and interpretation to them. However, I would also be very sad if there wasn't at least one person who tried to play it the way I wrote and meant it to be.
