Mina Mazzini is, for Ripley, one of those many elements of a life that he longs for but can only inhabit furtively; of a plane of possibilities that has been, by chance, destined to be witnessed through daydreams. A life that contrasts with the one he has been designated to live. A life of poverty, of nothing, of crime, a life of being unwanted.
He comes to her music, to Mina's music, through this new life, through Dickie, through one of her vinyl records. In this scene, perhaps for the first time, we see his daydreams materialize before his eyes.
Just as Andrew Scott embodies Tom Ripley, Johnny Flynn as Dickie Greenleaf, and Eliot Sumner as Freddie Miles, with the original version of "Il cielo in una stanza" from 1960, Hildegard de Stefano embodies Mina Mazzini.

Just finished watching Ripley, for the 2nd time. This is one of the (many) knockout scenes.
Takes your breath away, spine tingling and even though I didn't understand a word, my reaction was (and still is) the same as Tom Ripley's.

Hildegard de Stefano is mesmerizing in this too short scene. She has the graceful head and arm movements that makes it such a great tribute to Mina. What an incredible artistic achievement by Netflix this series is. Bravo!

Eliot Sumner is so perfect as Freddie, just the right mix of softness and protection, both inviting and wary. Freddie know immediately that there's something up with ... "Ripley" ... "Ripley" ... and then the not-so-subtle signal to Dickie. Hildegard de Stefano's impeccable outfit, spectacular hair and spotless physical rendition are just mesmerizing. A short cover, less that 2 minutes, but spot on. Enjoy.
