Sweet Dreams provides great listening practice for the /s/ and /z/ sounds and is a great sing-along song for the /s/ and /z/ pronunciation practice. The S and Z sounds take the same mouth position: the sides of the tongue touch the middle and back upper teeth with the tongue tip lowered a bit. Air flows out the middle part of the tongue. To create the hissy, breathy /s/ sound the vocal cords do NOT vibrate. To produce the buzzy /z/ sound, the vocal cords are activated.

The letter S is sometimes pronounced /s/ and sometimes pronounced /z/. Listen for this difference between the S that begins the word SWEET (the voiceless /s/ sound) and the S that ends the word DREAMS (the voiced /z/ sound).

The words SWEET and DREAMS both contain the /i/ as in GREEN vowel sound. The word THIS contains the /ɪ/ as in SILVER sound.
