There are two types of horror games, ones that make you shit yourself and are littered with jump scares, and there are ones that make you cry in fear, like this one, because of how quiet and just terrifying it is

I feel like to get the most out of games like this you need monsters that counter each other.
For example a monster that requires you to be quiet and another that requires you to be loud in order to scare it away. A Monster you need to look at, and you shouldn't. One you have to stay still for, and one you have to run away from. While alot of games already have these types of monsters, they don't really get the mixing/interaction aspect down well. In order to not make every encounter simple and easily avoided you need to have multiple monsters in a single encounter but with multiple options to solve it. Like having the peanut stand behind shyguy in scp, or the gas dog and the blind dog in the same area from lethal company.

Probably been suggested already but just in case- The spots on the camera near the cross-head dude was probably radiation. You could hear a geiger counter ticking faster the closer it got to you. So... Uranium cross maybe? lol
