Harmonising a melody with chords, inversions and cadences. Learn all about advanced music harmony, building and choosing chords and how to harmonise a melody. Suitable for candidates preparing for ABRSM Grade 6, Grade 7 and Grade 8 music theory. When we look at music, we can think about it in two different ways. We can look at it from left to right - this is the melody and rhythm. Or, we can look at it from top to bottom - this is the harmony. Harmony is two or more notes played together at the same time. As soon as there is more than one pitch sounding at a time, you have harmony. The study of harmony involves chords and their construction and chord progressions and the principles of connection that govern them. This music theory lesson will explain how chords are built, chord inversions, chord progressions and cadences, the different naming systems used to describe chords and most importantly how to choose chords to harmonise a melody. We'll start with a melody and go through the process of chord choices and what to think about when harmonising music.

This is brilliant teaching: clear and immediately practical. If only music theory was always taught like this. There's no need for gimmicks - just get the essential information across and let folk get on with applying it. I think many music teachers avoid theory because they fear their students will find it boring or irrelevant, but actually it's essential - there's no getting away from this stuff if you want to be a fully independent musician. Knowing theory is actually liberating because it gives our students a stronger musical voice. We owe them this!

I just want to thank you for these lessons! I've been playing music for about 10 years, but I've always had a hard time to sit down to learn proper theory. You walk us through the concepts of music in such a way that it's easy to follow and understand, which is rare to see! Thank you again!

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! You are a truly inspiring teacher! I’ve always wanted to know how to harmonize many melodies that I had though of and I kept listening to many Bach Chorales, cantatas, motets etc. but never knew how to understand at least a little bit of what he does. And there you are! Wonderful lessons! Wonderful examples! Once again Thank You!!!
