Top 10 album to listen to in your backyard with cigar and beer after mowing lawn

I miss when math rock didn't require super clean virtuoso guitar licks on a fan fretted Ibanez with shitloads of tapping.

I was at a record store in Oakland off of Forbes back in the 90's and heard this on their stereo system. It was a WTF moment. Amazing musicianship and composition. These white boys can jam.

Any drummer no matter what style of music they play should own this record. Damon Che is a freak of nature.

so brilliant the way this ends with the same beat at the start of the next album. this is sort of like a complete double-album-length thorough-going working-out of the whole 'math rock' genre. taking all the bits apart, looking at how it works, putting it back together in all the different possible combinations, rigorously exercising every element. then at the end of the last track, the parts just sort of peter out one by one as if to say "that's it... that's how it works... there's no more". then the next album ("what burns") begins with the SAME drum beat and develops from it in a completely new free style that no-one's really successfully copied, transcending the genre entirely... what a band.

love the individuality of old ā€œmath rockā€. i know that there are plenty of amazing bands today but i feel like they sound a little similar to each other and donā€™t seem to separate themselves quite like the old bands. it might be the guitars for me idk tho.

THE BEST Don Caballero Album. This album is the perfect in-between of distorted riffs and experimentation

I just keep discovering new things from old artists of the past that I could have never have known because in 1995 I was 0 years old

Simply their finest, with "What Burns..." nipping at its formidable heels. Math Rock's absolute gold standard. Oh, and HOW IN GOD'S NAME DOES THIS ONLY HAVE 60 LIKES???!!

Reacquainting myself with Damon's playing now that I've actually seen clips of him and that extremely disturbing snare placement and technique. I will never second-guess someone who's accomplished what he has musically and over the entire corpus of his work. The more I consider it, the more it seems possible or likely that had someone intervened to "fix" his technique he never would have developed the way he did and we'd be deprived of all of this.

I don't care for this genre of music at all, but Don Cab are one of my favourite bands. This is their best album after American Don imo, second song particularly is something else. It's far easier to make music like this these days, due to advances in technology / recording techniques etc... but this is as real as it gets.
