so brilliant the way this ends with the same beat at the start of the next album. this is sort of like a complete double-album-length thorough-going working-out of the whole 'math rock' genre. taking all the bits apart, looking at how it works, putting it back together in all the different possible combinations, rigorously exercising every element. then at the end of the last track, the parts just sort of peter out one by one as if to say "that's it... that's how it works... there's no more". then the next album ("what burns") begins with the SAME drum beat and develops from it in a completely new free style that no-one's really successfully copied, transcending the genre entirely... what a band.

Reacquainting myself with Damon's playing now that I've actually seen clips of him and that extremely disturbing snare placement and technique.
I will never second-guess someone who's accomplished what he has musically and over the entire corpus of his work. The more I consider it, the more it seems possible or likely that had someone intervened to "fix" his technique he never would have developed the way he did and we'd be deprived of all of this.

I don't care for this genre of music at all, but Don Cab are one of my favourite bands. This is their best album after American Don imo, second song particularly is something else. It's far easier to make music like this these days, due to advances in technology / recording techniques etc... but this is as real as it gets.
