The idea that upper management prefers young “talent” because the client or consumer prefers youth is technically true, but they don’t care about that. The purpose of always pursuing youth within the ranks is to cheapen the workforce. The longer someone has worked at a particular company the more raises they’ve accrued over the years, and the more promotions they are due. It becomes harder and harder to come up with reasons to tell them “no” when they ask for something entirely reasonable. The only “older” members of SCDP are the two related to its founding, Roger and Bert, even Don is only in his late 30s in the show. Not to mention, more often than not, allowing a “veteran” of the company to have long tenures results in increased competition for upper management jobs. Which is exactly why every time a different management team took over (the Brits, Cutler, etc) they immediately tried to cut out members of the old management team, like Roger and Lane with the Brits, and Don with Cutler. It’s all about making yourself indispensable, by undercutting potential competition.

i think most older people feel they know more than youngsters and i believe it's a fair assumption. the older you are the more life experience you have. i for one certainly wish i had the mind i do now about 5-10 years ago

The one thing young people have over older people, is blind wonder, and perspective. Some may take that as a negative, but it could also be a benefit. It is that energy, that adventurousness that comes with sailing unknown waters, that creates unique angles to which we can view things. As Neil DeGrasse Tyson said, "Audacious visions have the power to alter mind-states — to change assumptions of what is possible". So yeah, the young benefit from the seasoned guidance of their older colleagues, but so too could those same colleagues stave off stagnation, mustiness and tunnel vision, thanks to their youthful colleagues.

I was surprised Don felt this way. I guess he changed his mind by Season 7 when he passed the torch to Peggy.

Guys I'm 23 years old and I'm so anxious about the future. Work, relationships, school etc I lose sleep a lot on this and it eats away at my brain lol. What does the future have in store for us? Will it be better or worse.

So back in those days, they didn't believe, the young could actually make a difference, that they were just a fase in their working days? Today the elder like to believe, the young ones are actually the new generation, the new minds and personally i am grateful to be at a working place where a bit older people than myself appreciate the young minds of youthsters..
