Kennedy says crews are still working to extinguish around 40 hotspots across the Port Hills.
Temperatures are cooler today and while the wind has increased, helicopters are still able to join the firefighting efforts. All residents but one have been able to return to their properties on the Port Hills.
Firefighting operations on the Port Hills will continue through until Thursday, with a gradual scaling back of crews.
Kennedy says the fire danger remains high in Canterbury, and people need to be aware of doing any work that could cause a spark.
