Romania escaped worse punishment. Sure, Romania couldn't get Moldova and Bessarabia back. And lost the land Bulgaria took from them. But they got Transylvania back from Hungary. Considering the Romanians provided over 500K troops for Operation Barbarossa, the USSR could have inflicted much worse things for them.

Fun fact: The first Red Army unit to enter Bucharest in 1944 was a division made up of Romanian volunteers made up soldiers recruited from POW camps and Romanian Communists who immigrated to the Soviet Union.
The division was called the Tudor Vladimirescu division, also called the 1st Romanian Volunteer division in Red Army documents.
There were 2 Red Army divisions made up of Romanian volunteers. The 2nd one was called Horia Closca si Crisan, or 2nd Romanian Volunteer Division. It was commanded by General Mihail Lazar, a former Romanian Army officer 4 times awarded Nazi medals for his actions during the war on the Eastern front, including being personally awarded by Hitler with the Knight's Cross of the Iron Cross with Oak Leaves for his command of Romanian Troops during the Battle of Stalingrad.
After the War he joined the Romanian Communist Party and was appointed as the commander of the 4th Romanian Army.

Exactly the same with Bulgaria. It was forced to join on Germany's side or get invaded. Then it got invaded by the Soviets and forced to join on the Soviets and fight Germany all the way to Austria... That is the fate of the smaller countries , you don't pick your allies , they force you into it.

The Romanians aligned with Germany because the Germans were annexing and occupying everyone who didnāt take the offer of āallianceā. They were used economically and militarily, but in return were promised the return of lands taken by the Soviets a year prior and even more beyond that.
When the tide turned, Mikhail saw that Romania would likely become a major battleground between Germans, Soviets, and local factions such as the Iron Legion/Guard. Taking action, he decided to simply surrender to Soviet occupation without a fight knowing that whilst he may not be safe, Romania wouldnāt become a war torn state like Poland did. For this act, Stalin personally awarded him with several Red Army medals for heroism, etc, although they did still depose him.
Long story short, Romania did what its more powerful neighbours told it to, and in return wasnāt butchered as much as those who didnāt listen.

So basically for who wants to know.
Romania declared to take no sides but was of much value due to oil needs and geographical warfare advantage for any of the sides. Hitler and stalin forced romania into war. The 2 came to an agreement that soviet union will take moldova by force through an ultimatum.
Romania joined sides with the axis because they were in need of protection from the soviet union. ( the state has spoken with the allies first and they said do whatever you need to survive because we cant help you with paris under siege and later captured ) the hitler, to motivate hungary and shackle romanians ,took northern transylvania and gave it to austro hungary in the 2nd vienna award. Then when the battlefield evened a bit they joined sides with soviets because that was the only way to get transylvania back. Yet we still lost basarabia.
Tldr: we didnt switch sides to avoid destruction, we picked a side out of need and then fought against our āalliesā to gain back our land
