If you don't know, Peru at that time were in the golden period with their young prospect Teofilo Cubilas being the major spotlight. The team had not only prevailed over Argentina in the qualification stage, but also reached the quarterfinals of the World Cup, which was their best showing in the tournament (so far). They lost to Brazil, who, at that time, were considered one of the greatest national team in football history with prime Pele and even won every single games in both qualifiers and the tournament. An interesting thing is that in order to have a chance of qualifying for that tournament, Argentina fixed the match between Bolivia and Peru. As it turned out later, Bolivia's victory not only prevented Argentina from qualifying for the championship, but also pushed the Albicelestes to last place in the group, instead of second if the Peruvians won. This shows that bribery never pays off, even if it is not punished.
