Zinsser Gardz is also brilliant at sealing really high suction surfaces. I had to skim above a picture rail recently where the plaster had all come away and it was back to render that could suck the soul from a zombie. 2 good coats and i manged to get a really nice finnish

I'm about to start a 3 days a week for 5 weeks course on plastering. My ultimate aim is to get out on my own doing it. I've been in all types of construction all my life. I'm 37 now and need a change. There is an advanced course afterwards also. I'm going to get on that too. Any advice will be appreciated and taken on board with thanks 👍

Do you use the same type of trowel for all laying, wet coats and polish?

Kirk, can you explain your little finger movement when applying plaster. It's fascinating.

Any truth in putting PVA in your plaster to give you extra time on a large area? Someone told me about it the other day and I’ve never heard that one before

25 years plastering never had any problem using pva to control suction.

That’s some buttery smooth plaster, shit you not I spend more time pulling the shitty lumps out from where the supply yard keep them in shitty conditions

If you’re new to plastering wear a mask when mixing don’t do what I done & end up with copd . Be prepared for your body to fall apart I loved plastering 50 years of it but it takes its toll elbows knees hips back are a few of the problems you will get along the way. plastering has kept my head above water but I’ve earned every penny I have & I think all plasterers not 2 week skimmers will agree with that .

At the age of 38 and after being in high management in the corporate world I decided to start a plastering business. I had done it with my dad as he is a builder. Anyway, 7 years down the line I’d honestly say don’t bother. I’m ok because it gives me the flexibility that I need with the kids and luckily my wife has a very good job. Financially you’ll never earn decent money and if I was a single man I’d of had to knock it on the head years ago. Good skill to have but as a career, forget it.
