Absolutely 100% what we all need to do.
Get out and rediscover our heritage ON FOOT.
You get to smell the air, the foliage, feel the weather, touch the trees and stones, talk to the animals, and it invigorates, refreshes and even resets your body.
Well done Lady Alice.
A mountain bike isnt bad either.

I've always found the OS Landranger 1:50 000, the best map for hiking. Exactly the one Alice is wrestling with. 😅
England, Scotland, and Wales, covered by 'sheets' numbered basically 1 (Shetland Isles) thru 204 (within Cornwall). Each sheet covers an area within a county. Look on the back of the maps for index to the series

I grew up navigating, walking, hiking and generally exploring with Grandpa's WWII army compass and Explorer/Landranger (1:25k/1:50k) maps.
I remember a shelf, in the under stairs cupboard, full of OS maps from all over the UK.

Two top tips ( for free ) . Do a bit of prep and look at the route the night before . Maybe even write down some important landmarks - turn left at the church , right at the pub etc . It saves you looking at your phone throughout the route .Take an actual compass with you . I have rescued wanderers who have lost the signal for their digital maps and compasses . Knowing where due North ( etc ) is when you are walking through a dense wood helps a great deal - and hopefully prevents you walking around in circles ( rather than successfully completing a circular walk ) .
Red flag - don't just cut out a walk from a newspaper and off you go . Along the North Downs Way , and Greensand Way I regularly walkers who have done just that . However , I personally get much satisfaction getting them back on the path of righteousness 😊

I\nAlso used maps and the phone once I've done my journey for the day.I mark on the map where I was and then encase the phone is dead or not working.I at least can tell on the map where the last place I was.So there's no guesswork and trying to figure out by using landmarks , so the phone's great , but always mark on your map before the day's

If I lived in England I would be doing walks as often as I could. I live in Australia and we are really a baby country when it comes to history, there is just so much of it over there. We visited in 2019 for a couple of weeks and I can’t wait to go back.

Could you share the route you took from the OS map? Could it be downloaded perhaps? Many thanks

I wandered around the English countryside in 1971 using OS maps. I'd still be lost if I didn't have those!
