His first play, the one-act opera Dr. Miracle, was a sophisticated piece that mastered the operatic language of the time. He was already aware of not only his talents but also his loopholes at an early age. Considered one of his best, Symphony C major was written by him at age 17, which easily compares with those written by Mozart and Mendelssohn at the same age. While studying in Rome, he wrote, "I don't want to be sophisticated. I would like to have an idea before writing a song, but the works in Paris were not."
