Robby Cuthbert, a designer in Palo Alto, CA, demonstrates the tension based design of his Contour Coffee Table. This modern, hand-made design combines curved bamboo legs with steel cables under tension to create a remarkably rigid structure, despite the fact that none of the legs actually touch each other. So how does it work and how much weight can it support? Let's find out. Visit www.robbycuthbert.com/ to see more.

You should test one by continually adding weight until failure.

Very impressive! Keep in mind, when you jumped off, that created an instantaneous dynamic load of ~200 pounds. The reason the base held up, is that all that load is distributed evenly over a significant percentage of the length of the arcs. Not only does it handle vertical loading, it should be very stable for radial loading as well.(shifting your weight from side to side) I've never seen geometric tension only designs used for a load bearing structure. Thanks for posting!

Beautiful piece, and fascinating too. Would love to see a stress test to understand the limits.

Wonder what will break first, the wood, or the crimps

hey Robby, so i saw your table on the make youtube channel, you really do have one of the best tensile structures after Buckminster himself :P
Can you show videos of how you assemble your structures, and tips on how to make tensile structures? Making these structures is super complicated when just starting :)
