Every night since they were born, we have tucked our dogs in to bed, got them in their bed, got them settled (after they’ve been outside) when they are laid down they get a treat and fed we turn the lights off, say goodnight and leave the room. My cat used to sleep on my bed- but now she sleeps in the kitchen with the dogs. It’s been the same routine for years and they just do it automatically. It’s hard at first- we want cuddles as much as they do- but it’s actually for batter in the long run. Everyone sleeps properly. They know when it’s bedtime and when they can get up. No crazy howling in the middle of the night. When they are tired they will go do their own bedtime routine by themselves.
Basically what I’m saying is, a few weeks of consistent conscious training is best for everyone in the long run. I’ve found that they actually like knowing what is coming as well. They like their bedtime. (They will let you know if you do it wrong. You measure out the wing amount of toothpaste to put in their digger and you’ll know about it. You forget the fresh water, they will tell you, don’t tidy their toys away? Don’t straighten their blankets?! Wait until 10:20, when it should be done at 10? You’d better watch your back! )
I highly recommend everyone does this- it doesn’t mean they don’t get to sleep on our bed as a treat occasionally, they do, but most nights they are tucked safely in their bed and we get a full night of sleep.
Side note- we do have BIG dogs, but I think the same applies to little dogs. Like I said, my cat has this routine too. I think we’ve got the only cat that skeins for eight hours at night! (There’s a security camera in the kitchen. They genuinely don’t more!)

Here’s some advice… be consistent, no mixed signals and positive reinforcement.
What I mean by being consistent is if he is waking you up at 3 am jumping up on your bed don’t leave him on there because this is seen as acceptable behaviour to him as there’s no repercussion and will continue doing it. Second point of no mix signals, If you’re okay with having the dog on the bed sometimes, but not all the time, then maybe train him with a command word that eventually will make him think okay that I can be here because my owner said/done this. My dog responds better with hand gestures, i tap on my bed, say up and then he will jump up, it’s like an invitation. Point of positive reinforcement, Make his dog bed enjoyable for him, give him treats when he lays down, maybe put his favourite toys there, a shirt that smells like you or an old pillow case you don’t use, could also use a heated blanket (within moderation), in the morning if he spent the whole night in his bed, give him so much praise in the morning, because then he realises that if I do this and stay here, I get a good reward from it. Stay consistent and you’ll get it trust me :)
