You should be off the mountain or in shelter before mid afternoon. This is valid for all the summits in the Alps. The reason is the summertime afternoon showers with potential thunderstorms. This is routine and should not come as a surprice to anyone trying a climb. The majority of people start the climb very early in the morning for this reason.

I lived in CH for years and never saw the Matterhorn in person. I hiked, skied and snowboarded many other mountains while living there.
