The spartan thing is not true. What actually happened was that an unwanted or undesirable child would be placed outside the city gates as a sign of ostracizing from the upper class of Homoioi. The child would then be retrieved after sundown by the mother, but the child would no longer be considered a meme we of the spartan elite warrior caste.
