We really just have to stop gameifying politics

Not voting cause you think your candidate is gonna win is actually bonkers.

Also, America is one of the countries where results are broadcast on TV live as the votes are counted. Poland as a counterexample, forbids news stations from broadcasting political content during the voting process. In America this may make it seem like a candidate had a "lead" before being surpassed by the other candidate at the last moment, which is simply not what's happening

And the fact that it’s only two parties amplifies this, it’s wild how so many people see politics like sport: you want your side to win, no matter who they are or what they do

The most problematic aspect of this (to me) was mentioned clearly in the Wikipedia screenshot:
"Horse race journalism is political journalism of elections that resembles coverage of horse races because of the focus on polling data and public perception instead of candidate policy."

It's journalism that doesn't focus on the actual content of their policies...

No one talking how the UK had their general election on 4th July (America’s main holiday for setting off fireworks, Independence Day) and the US have their election on 5th November (Britain’s main holiday for setting off fireworks, Bonfire night)

Odd coincidence that has absolutely no significance whatsoever, you’re welcome for this information.

And the mentality “I don’t have to vote, one vote won’t change anything…” like do you not think about how if you normalise this mentality it becomes more common? Therefore having a massive impact? We have (edit: similar) issues like this in Australia, some people vote for the 2 major parties thinking their single vote for a smaller party wont change anything, that’s the issue.

In the UK you stand for office not run.

This would make more people convinced to go vote than the actual ads that just say “please vote”. Pointing out that there is no lead and that votes just seem that way because they haven’t been counted yet should be pointed out more often.

It really doesn't help when the US voting system itself is 270 To Win, like the candidates need to somehow cross a finish line.

People tend to forget that not all voters participate in polls, and not all people being polled will vote.

here's another horse racing term used to describe the election: the system the US uses is called "first past the post" which describes who wins a horse race

Yeah it's actually good for a politician to convince his/her voters that they are "barely making it"

I seriously don’t understand people who are able to vote and just don’t. It’s so incredibly important but so many people skip out for the weirdest reasons.

This is why I much prefer the term Stand for Election.

Because it is far more accurate. You stand to show your intent to take part in an election.

They talk about it like a competition and forget to mention how the results would actually affect the people watching.
