Japan had the same strategy in ww2. They ended up with a lot of islands they were unable to defend with their air force and navy. The Americans were able to capture the islands they wanted,and just ignored the rest.

They're basing this in their baseless dashline maps, which is proven and tried in the court, in the laws of the seas or UNCLOS, that is baseless. Sparatlys islands, etc. are the backyard of the Philippines especially the Bajo de Masinloc. Only a few miles away from the Philippines, it is inside our EEZ or exclusive economic zone, and many many miles away from China. Philippines never claimed what's not ours, we are just defending the territories we rightfully owned..
