It’s funny, I had a friend in high school whose family spoke Frisian. I could understand most of what she was saying without knowing any of the language, just through context and grammar.

Whoever says Scots is a dialect of English is just deluded. They both diverged in their own sound shifts, grammar, and foreign influence from Middle English. In fact, Scots has their own dialects in of itself. Before English took over as the prestige language in Scotland, Scots was the prestige language.

Scots English developed independently and a long time ago, I'd say it can be considered a separate language

It's easier to notice if you look at Old English and Old Frisian together.

If Scots isn't a language, then Frisian definitely isn't a language. In its core it's Dutch with a few different letters and sounds, and a bit of different vocabulary, but it's definitely a form of Dutch and perfectly comprehensible to most Dutchmen
