I find it likely the Praetor Suit protects the Doom Slayer from the adverse effects of the Power Ups by properly channeling their Argent (and it is Argent, I don't know where the idea Power Ups are demon's souls come from) in a safe manner, which explains why he doesn't die because of them. We know it can channel Argent energy into him, through the suit to repair it and down his arms to feed ammo to his weapons, so it's a logical conclusion to reach that the Suit harnesses the extreme energy housed in the Power Up to safely enhance the Slayer until it's expended.

and for the classic doom power ups
mega amour: just harder normal amour who would have guessed
soul sphere: the essence of a human soul (according to the only explanation of it being the doom bible)
mega sphere: likely a demon soul
classic berserk: i am pretty sure they are just steroids in classic doom compared to the demonic artifact of the modern games
lite-amp, computer map and rad suit: likely just UAC equipment
same with the canister, collar, extinguisher and UAC credit in the doom RPG games

According to the lore he doesn't need weapons to kill demons he just uses them because he like to so I choose to believe his suit moderates everything that made him the slayer of legend.
The berserk powerup shuts down the suit for a short time so he can be the slayer that terrified hell.

Doom Slayer is also (according to lore) the only person in existence strong enough to control and sustain these powerups

I feel like the demon that tries to possess the slayer is so scared that it just does exactly what he wants it to so it won’t get ripped apart by his soul
