My mom instilled in me from a young age how important it would be for me to have a big girl job with big girl insurance. Since I was an amputee from birth we knew a bit about this expensive road ahead 🤑
What we didn’t know was how many battles we would have to fight to get a leg. Insurance tells you what components you can have, when you are allowed new parts, and so many more details. It’s crazy to me people who have never met you are deciding what you need or don’t need.
In 2012 I was hospitalized for an almost fatal infection in my lungs. I lost 25 lbs and couldn’t fit into my prosthetic. I had large hospital bills and needed a new leg on top of that. However, I wasn’t “due” for a new leg.
This year was much less of a battle but I have taken some steps to help me make the process easier
1) I know my rights as an amputee. I am aware of my specific insurance “allowance” as well as the legal rights being a Colorado citizen
2) I found a general practitioner who has experience writing “prescriptions” for prosthetics. She is able to ensure the wording is just right so there is no back and forth on that portion of it
3) I have found a really great clinic after trying out about 5 in my state I happily stayed at @evergreenpocolorado 💕 they listen to my complaints, my wishes, and my leg guy listens to me vent about life as an amputee
