I agree they could be any various lengths of times as it is not specifically stated.
I do believe they are day periods as we observe.
To me I see the description tell us that the sun which was created later was simply a placeholder or lamp, a physical observable object for the light. I would suggest light is very spiritual like. Characteristically.
So the light existed day and nights 3 times. Then the orb.
I would point to a description I see in revelations as a witness to this idea. Messiah being the lamp but not the light itself.
A real lamp is not the light itself too.

As my understanding of Genesis 1 is about the creation of our reality fairly specifically.
He rested on the 7th as a witness and sign.
All we can do is assume what he might have “done” ; my argument to that other than what would it matter, I would deduce that he did whatever he was doing prior to this creation or admiring it.
If it is indeed more spiritual than certainly the specifics of days likely wouldn’t matter or be accurate for the actual creation.
I lean to more literal. I believe there is enough specific to support it.

I can understand why people like a spiritual understanding but I also think about in numbers where he says of Moses how he speaks plainly and not in riddles to him.
