The Netherlands didn't change its name. They're just trying to educate people to use the name of the country instead of only referring to 2 provinces.

They did not change their name, they just finally used the correct one. It's the Netherlands, it has always been the Netherlands.

We were never officially called Holland. People just named us that. It's always been The Netherlands. So no, we haven't changed our countries name. Ridiculous.

It was always called The Netherlands, Holland was a nickname mostly used by people not living in our country. Thats why many Dutch people also used the nickname Holland.

First one that comes to mind is Zimbabwe. It was Rhodesia for many, many years before the bush wars. Biafra,Ceylon, Siam, Czechoslovakia, Burma, Bohemia…they all go by different names today.

Walks up to a Texan. "Hey there Yankee!"
Walks up to a Scot: "Hey there Englander!"
Walks up to a Limburger: "Hey Hollander."
Gets shot with a revolver, stabbed with a broken bottle and cussed out with an effete accent.

Iran didn't "change their name" they asked us to call them by the correct name as they continued to use the same name they had for thousands of years

Meanwhile in the Philippines, several attempts to rename the country was made to distance ourselves from King Philip II of spain. However, every proposed name faced opposition from a certain groups of people, or simply finds it inappropriate. That's why the name that equally offended everyone remained.

This wasn't technically a name change though. People just called them Holland informally. Legally, it was The Netherlands.

I think countries changing their names is not just abrupt incidence. Take Sri Lanka for example. In the past few thousands of years, it has been called by various names like taprobane, sinhala dweepaya. In one indian piece of literature (ramayanaya) it has been known as lanka. Under the colonial rule it was called Ceylon. But in 1972 this country became a republic and named as Sri Lanka. Still the present constitution’s first article identifies it as both Sri Lanka and Ceylon. Both are legal valid names.
