Overlapping Negates Do Not Stack - Advanced Rulings

Did you know that negates cannot stack? If you negate the effect of a monster with Effect Veiler, you are not allowed to also use Infinite Impermanence on it, because it's not a legal target for a negate, since its effects are already negated. For the most part this ruling almost never matters, except under a few niche circumstances.

Yugioh is both horrific and beautiful because of these little rules all over the place

I once won a game against swordsoul because I misclicked to activate one of my negated effects, wich prompted my opponent to chain another negate, and negate their own boss, the only legal target on the field.

Edit: For further context, it was an Anchord Drill Summoned off Urgent schedule.

I believe that a lawyer can be a great duelist

I came across a similar issue with Brotherhood of the Fire Fist - Tiger King, where he can negate every monster on the board apart from beast-warriors for the next 2 turns, but a monster I had negated with Forbidden Droplet wasn't affected by it, and regained its effects the next turn

Only mattered for me with imperm vs skill drain, since that set imperm cant negate any face up monsters, you wont be able to negate the skill drain in that column

The other day I learned you can negate a non gemini - summoned gemini monster.
You negate the effect that makes it a normal monster

So it goes from an effect monster to a normal monster cosplay to an effect monster with its effects negated.

On a related note, a Gemini summon is still a summon so you can Solemn it.

A very common TOSS interaction was your Striker opponent using widow anchor to negate then steal your monster, then you would chain chalice to negate your own monster first, preventing the steal.

This ruling came into play in one of my games recently, I was playing Sky Striker and wanted to use Widow Anchor to take control of the opponent's Baronne. They tried to negate the Widow Anchor, but I imperm'd their Baronne thinking I'd still be able to steal it. Unfortunately, Widow Anchor fizzled out because the negate has to happen before the steal and the target was already negated.

This also comes into play with skill drain and cards that can tribute themselves for their effect. Imperm and Veiler would stop lonefire blossom outright. But since their effects are already being negated by skill drain, there's no effect to negate so they don't work. But since skill drain only cares about monsters on the field, lonefire will be resolved normally.

On master duel i remember an instance in which i used droplet on a shangri ira, to then go into arc rebellion and punch through a fenrir, thinking that arc rebellion's permanent negate would prevent the shangri ira from activating next standby phase

Nope...since i used droplet first, only its temporary negate applied...and shangri ira was online again next turn

This comes up really often playing Tearlaments because you cannot Sulliek the same monster again and again to keep sending your kaleido heart from field.

A very cool interaction using this rule is in the Sky Mirror(if you ever find yourself wanting to play some TOSS) where you can Widow Anchor in chain to your opponent's Widow Anchor so they can't negate nor take a monster

That forbidden chalice negation is tied to its ongoing effect. That's wild.

I noticed this with Sky Striker Widow Anchor. I can't steal a monster with it if I already negated its effect with imperm, or if there's something like skill drain on the field.

Can you talk about how tokens cannot he banished face down(well they don't leave the field or are affected by such cards that banish them facedown)? I noticed it in edpro and dueling nexus so idk if is an actual rulling or a bug
