I don't own a Van De Graaff generator, but I own a decently large Wimshurst machine that I bought from a scientific and educational supply store. With the relative humidity currently at about 35% in my house, I am getting almost 11 cm electrical arcs. And the sound is terrifying. I haven't mustered the courage to put my hand in the way yet, but I've gotten a few pretty good shocks when I didn't discharge the condensers all the way with my long screwdriver. According to an internet search the voltage per cm of air is 30,000 volts. I'm not sure how accurate this is, or if it depends on humidity. But it's possible that my Wimshurst machine is generating over a quarter of a million volts.

Its really cool but its too safe for my taste. I prefer charging myself with 800kV voltage multiplier while its not as fancy its definetely more terryfying with bright white sparks that sound like a gunshot as there is no current limit. Just a Little bit more dangerous. And it turns my air into ozone stinky mass within a minute. The coolest part is how all the metal objects nearby glow purple in the dark when its running. And of course hissing crackling and more eerie sounds.
