In the era between the 7th and 4th millennium BC, a wave of drastic change in the way of life spread through Europe.
People abandoned the nomadic lifestyle and permanently settled in villages.
They used durable materials, new artifacts like ceramic pottery, polished stone tools and implements for weaving and spinning.
These changes mark the passage from a hunter-gatherer lifestyle to a farming community. A new era. The new stone age. The Neolithic.
This transition is considered by many to be the most important change in the history of anatomically modern humans after arriving in Europe.
With permanent settlements, the era brought with it the cultivation of land and domestication of animals.
This meant increased food production based on cereals and dairy products, which allowed for a larger population. The increased carbohydrates that replaced mostly protein diet led to smaller body size and more common tooth decay.
Humans went from passive beneficiaries of nature to its active transformers.
These transformations first appeared in the Near East and slowly spread throughout Europe, first appearing in the regions with mild winters (the Mediterranean) and the plains with loess soil (The Balkans and parts of central and western Europe) that was suitable for the crop cultivation practiced at the time.
It then spread along the coast and major rivers, reaching British isles and Scandinavia towards the end of the 5th millennium BC.
