I don't use DNDBeyond, but that's great news. I do refer newbies to it fairly often since the basic rules are there and the ready-to-go character creator is fairly user friendly.

I can't imagine how they didn't plan to let people choose which ruleset to use in the first place - like, did they expect everyone in the middle of a years-long campaign to just port it partway through? Next time I start a new campaign I'd like to try the new rules, but I it would be easier in my current campaign to just switch to playing with paper character sheets...

A long time ago they stated this. The changelog was mistaken and corrected. WotC isnât cool but this is misleading. There was never going to be a forced or coerced update via content changes.
