Mercury, the smallest and innermost planet in our Solar System, is full of surprises despite its tiny size. This planet experiences the most extreme temperature variations in the solar system, ranging from 427°C (800°F) during the day to -173°C (-280°F) at night. Remarkably, scientists have discovered water ice deposits in permanently shadowed craters at Mercury's poles, delivered by ancient comet impacts. The planet's unusually large iron core, which makes up about 75% of its radius, generates a weak but detectable magnetic field, suggesting the core may still be partially molten and active.
