Do you ever look carefully at the chords you're playing in a progression because if you do one thing you'll see is that sometimes chords have fingers in common but how does that help you?

This is a series of beginner guitar tutorials where we look at the basic major and minor chords and look at how the chord fingerings can affect the way you make your transitions, changes, switches, whatever you want to call it

One of the things I’ve discovered as I’ve been playing over the last nearly 40 years is that when the chords have fingers in common, that’s when changes can be smoother.

This series will look at the chords in “keys”

Keys are groups of chords, so for example in the key of G which is what we’re looking at today, the chords are G Am Bm C D Em, although you'll only be looking at the first 5 chords. Those are the basic chords.

For all these lessons, I’ll be using basic versions of these chords, there won’t be any full on barre chords but there will be a few mini me barres, but don’t panic. And only using the most commonly taught beginner shapes, which means I will show you alternative versions of various chords, a couple of As, a few different Gs. I’ll also only be focusing on chords that have “anchors”, fingers that keep you on the fretboard when changing.

When you practise, do it slowly. Use some of the tips to help you. Once you've built these chords into your muscle memory you won’t need anchors anymore. I know when I’m playing my fingers generally lift off as I make my way to the next chord. But when i was learning, I was very patient and certainly very very persistent in getting those chord changes sounding smooth
