George Lucas once asked his friend Irvin Kershner director of The Empire Strikes Back (the second Star Wars movie) something amazing, that left him completely stunned.

The best decision ever, in the history of filmmaking. A total unknown becomes the number one GREATEST SEQUEL DIRECTOR IN HISTORY: Irving Kirshner.

When I watch The Empire Strikes Back, if I step back a little from the story and just look, it feels like a master class in visual direction. The composition, the blocking, shadows and textures, Kershner guides the viewer’s gaze exactly where he wants it.

Empire Strikes Back is my all-time favorite Star Wars movie, idk what it is, but the ending scene with Leia, Luke, C3P0 and R2D2 starring off into space hits me with a sense of nostalgia. I wasn't even born back then but something about the OT (especially there posters) gives me a sense of nostalgia.

It looks like George Lucas saw more in this man than he saw in himself. And he absolutely made the right decision. I mean so many people The empire strikes back is the best Star Wars film so it definitely worked out

By far Lucas's best decision and Lucas's worst decision !!! Should have hired him for SW6, SW1, SW2 and SW3 letting Irvin choose the percentage of the box office as payment !!!

Great, as Kershner did a super bang-up job, but that was obviously after Lucas picked him to direct his second Star Wars film, one of the three real, GOOD Star Wars films.

But like Kershner at the time, I also wonder why he in particular was chosen by Lucas when Lucas could've chosen anyone, even himself. So why did Lucas chose Kershner to direct one of his movies? Is it a secret? C'mon, tell me hehehehehe

Too bad he didn't get to direct any of the prequels.

On the surface, Kersh doesn't appear to be someone who should direct the "second" Star Wars. Obviously, Lucas' wisdom by FAR surpasses my own, as he made the greatest movie of all time. BTW, as a kid I only knew Irvin Kershner's name and not his body of work. I did know he made the greatest film of all time.
