Las ceremonias del auto de fe se iniciaban con una procesión de acusados de herejía, identificados por los sambenitos, prendas con símbolos religiosos que variaban en color y diseño según el delito y veredicto. Un manto amarillo con llamas y demonios señalaba a un hereje reincidente destinado a la ejecución, mientras que los arrepentidos llevaban un diseño más sencillo, compartiendo la vergüenza de la penitencia pública durante la procesión por la ciudad.
