What are beats? Beats are what is literally on the page.
There are two kinds of beats:
1. Active Buildup Beats
2. Reactive Breakdown Beats
Let’s say you meet somebody on the street for the very first time. You shake their hand.
• “Hi, I’m Sean.”
• “Hi, I’m Bill.”
That would be a buildup of a relationship.
An example of a breakdown beat would be:
• “Hi, I’m Sean—sorry, I don’t have time to talk. Goodbye.”
This is a breakdown beat: One person would be wanting to build something up, and another wants to break it down.
Think of it like strands from a spider: Buildup is like throwing out a strand of spiderweb to the other person; if they throw it back, your relationship gets stronger. If they take out a knife and cut the strand, it’s a breakdown.
