Never really had a problem drilling rivets. Make sure its a sharp bit and learn how to control your drill

Never had a drill bit move from that center hole, have had more than a few to start spinning before it goes all the way thru and have to grind them off

That's weird I've been doing this for almost 35 - 40 years now and I've never once had a problem with my drill bit walking?? Well actually I can't say that if I'm at an awkward angle and stretching it might slip because of the angle I'm at.. has nothing to do with the rivet being too much harder than the surrounding metal.. but I guess it's not too bad an idea to knock it out first if you actually have a center the right size.

Once you drive out the pen from the rivet, you can simply use some flush cutters to cut it on the back side and remove it.

Sounds more like a solution to a problem no one has. In sheet metal the bit is cutting the flang off the rivet, not drilling the center out of the rivet.

What about if you work in semi trailers?! I used to drill 2,000-3,000 rivets or holes in a 8hour shift! It was a good learning curve! Did alot of drilling cutting and welding along with light electrical work and brake work!

Bigger drill bit. Cuts the top off.

I actually like it when the drill bit goes a little off center. I can deal with the hole being a little wallered out, but the rivet spinning is a big problem, and they are less likely to apin if youre drilling off center.

I usually use a slightly bigger drill bit. And drill the head of the rivet off, bottom just falls in. Works for me.

All these nay sayers never drilled Ford window regulator rivets. I use this method and even use an automatic center punch to knock out the center pin.

Learn how to control your drill, and use a good sharp bit, youll be fine. Only time this is a problem is if youve literally never used tools in your life

You can't do that on flimsy aluminum...

Did machine maintenance for many years drilled out a S@#T ton of pop rivets the only problem i ever encountered was the rivet spinning in the hole sometimes other than that never had a problem drilling them out

Or get a drill bit 3 times bigger than the one you had (about the same size as the head).

Actually, the better way to remove a pop rivet is to use a bit slightly larger than the core down to just the top/head of the rivet. Then, take your dift and punch it out. Commercial aircraft structural mechanic
