The year-month-day date pattern is normal practice in East Asia, and I think it is tied to the languages too. Grammatically, the languages are structured from most general to most specific, and in dates, most general would be the year, followed by the month, then the day. I once listened to a westerner speaking in a podcast, talking about how the Chinese language influenced his life in the West, and that was that he would use the Chinese date pattern to arrange his computer files.
