In 1914 German troops were only 30 miles from Paris. Germany was about to win the war in just a few weeks. However, Military Governor of Paris Joseph-Simon Gallieni prepared to rally the French stating “I have received the mandate to defend Paris against the invader. This mandate, I shall carry out to the end.” Although the German armies were at the gates of Paris, they got there so quickly that their supply lines were over extended. Even worse, their was a gap between their armies. So with this information, French General Joseph Joffre ordered his forces stop retreating and strike at the weak point in their gap. French troops flooded in as fast as possible using any means necessary, including using Paris taxicabs. Suddenly the Germans could advance no more. French, British, and German troops clashed along the Marne river across a 150 mile long front. And eventually after a brutal few days the German armies were forced to fully retreat marking the first major failure of the war. However as both sides tried to outflank the other, both sides began constructing a vast network of trenches, ultimately locking both sides into a brutal 4 year long stalemate that cost them millions of lives.
