FYI: The bill to change the flag was sponsored by a Republican and signed into law by a Republican governor. But not without concessions to the people opposed to changing the flag. The current seal on blue flag will now have to be displayed above the new flag if they are on the same flagpole, and both flags will fly over the state capitol.

Petition to advocate for a newer flag that’s in the shape of Utah

As a native Utahn, I really like how the voting system was for the new design, instead of voting for a singular option they actually had us rate them, say why we did or did not like it, and went with the more popular choice. I have since bought it and fly it with pride.

There’s a term for this: “Citizens Against Virtually Everything”. Or, CAVE people

It’s amazing how literally everything in America has to be turned into a stupid partisan battle

CGP grey would be heartbroken if it was swapped. I think it’s his favorite flag in his recent video.

Update.
The petition failed; gaining only a third of the number of signatures needed.

I think a flag objectively sucking is a pretty bipartisan thing. But hey, that’s just me.

Utah, you deserve that upgrade. Let yourself have nice things

As a Utah citizen, I am quite saddened by the movements against the new flag. The old flag needed the update. I am quite sad that even the simplest of things are politicized and made into divisive points.

Imagine thinking that replacing the most run of the mill flag with a unique design is somehow a far left conspiracy...

I live in Utah and nothing passes here without Republican support. Zero. Republicans here have no one to blame but themselves.

Did those people ever think that the reason Utah's flag is being changed is because the old one is just boring?

There’s so many state flags with the state seal on a blue background. This new flag is awesome and symbolic of hard-work.

I quite like that flag, very simple, but still has meaning

I'm a Utahn. I like the new flag. The complaints seem completely arbitrary. It sounds like they're saying, "Having nice things is 'woke,' and we're against that."

Utahn here and I followed the flag process thoroughly. The length it took to make the flag was deliberate and apparently didn’t cost much. It was a mostly volunteer project with lots of public feedback (my choice was not the final flag but the chosen one was one of my liked flags). Also, Utah has a very outspoken group that “loves” the old flag (though I doubt any of them own/could identify it without pulling out binoculars). This group is ridiculous and I don’t know anyone who seriously wants the old flag to stay. They are a small minority and I can’t wrap my head around keeping the stupid default flag Utah had.

There were some interesting shenanigans with the star but apparently the native tribes it represented had a different approach that was reflected in the final flag. The whole “woke” thing is stupid. The flag wasn’t viewed as “problematic” except by anyone who despises anything loosely attached to LDS history (shocker, the 19th and 20th century Utah is defined by the LDS church). People complaining about erasing history probably couldn’t identify the history that was on the seal. There were some weird “pagan” rumors going around that were also dumb.

The woke argument was a straw man argument at best and was probably done to drag the fight into a national light. Which didn’t work out.

The flag failed a vote because there was some argument about the Star design, they made a quick amendment and it passed. It then had to go back to the house to get voted on again.
