Utahn here and I followed the flag process thoroughly. The length it took to make the flag was deliberate and apparently didnât cost much. It was a mostly volunteer project with lots of public feedback (my choice was not the final flag but the chosen one was one of my liked flags). Also, Utah has a very outspoken group that âlovesâ the old flag (though I doubt any of them own/could identify it without pulling out binoculars). This group is ridiculous and I donât know anyone who seriously wants the old flag to stay. They are a small minority and I canât wrap my head around keeping the stupid default flag Utah had.
There were some interesting shenanigans with the star but apparently the native tribes it represented had a different approach that was reflected in the final flag. The whole âwokeâ thing is stupid. The flag wasnât viewed as âproblematicâ except by anyone who despises anything loosely attached to LDS history (shocker, the 19th and 20th century Utah is defined by the LDS church). People complaining about erasing history probably couldnât identify the history that was on the seal. There were some weird âpaganâ rumors going around that were also dumb.
The woke argument was a straw man argument at best and was probably done to drag the fight into a national light. Which didnât work out.
The flag failed a vote because there was some argument about the Star design, they made a quick amendment and it passed. It then had to go back to the house to get voted on again.

FYI: The bill to change the flag was sponsored by a Republican and signed into law by a Republican governor. But not without concessions to the people opposed to changing the flag. The current seal on blue flag will now have to be displayed above the new flag if they are on the same flagpole, and both flags will fly over the state capitol.
