This 7th-century temple casts an inverted shadow, like a projector, that can be seen from the inside of the temple. Unbelievable, right? Virupaksha Temple is situated in Hampi, Karnataka, and is dedicated to God Shiva, who is worshiped as Virupaksha. Though the temple’s origins date back to the 7th century, the temple was expanded during the Hoysala period under the Vijayanagara Empire. The temple that we see today was built by a Nayaka named Lakkan Dandesha during the reign of the Vijayanagara King Prauda Deva Raya in the early 15th century. The shadow of the main tower falls on a wall in the Saalu Mandapa, around 300 feet away. What is amazing about this is that the shadow is inverted. This temple’s inverted shadow mystery has generated a lot of interest and fascinated people. Remarkably, the inverted shadow remains constant throughout the day and does not change its shape or position as the sun moves across the sky. There is a scientific explanation for the inverted shadow of the tower. But what is really astounding is the use of this principle of light on a gigantic scale, and that too in ancient times.
