Yeah if it's transactional in a way you cant refuse (loss of job, loss of your life, loss of other lives, ect) then it's not cheating it's SA.

It makes me so mad when people call Odysseus getting SA-ed him cheating. It’s not him cheating, it’s him being forced too because the women are more powerful than him and could kill or torture him if they wanted too. It’s a good example of how society views R@pe and especially men getting r@ped.

In addition to it being transactional and SA, I rmemeber a study i read a few years back that stated that it also mattered that they were goddesses and Odysseus was not. Some weird rule in ancient mythology meant sex with a god/goddess wasnt counted as cheating as we know it now. Its a very niche opinion and i cant remmeber where i read it, but i remember thinking that was such an arbitrary and odd point. That being said, even if it wasnt cheating on an ancient technicality, it 100% isnt cheating if its forced/coerced. Cheating requires consent.

Hermes had to talk Ody into sleeping with Circe to get her on his side. He argued until Hermes said it was the only way to get back to Penelope. And Ody pretty much thought of Penelope the entire time it was happening.
And Calypso repeatedly SA'd him while he was emotionally broken. He stopped resisting after a while, but he never enjoyed or wanted it.

Circe was also SA because of the nature of the power. Had Odysseus said no, much worse would’ve happened, he would’ve lost people. Circe took advantage of him.

Edit: okay so I’m sorry… I apparently misspoke, I had a mixed bag of information because of incorrect sources (people who’ve read the odyssey and whatnot)… so Odysseus did it on purpose because he hoped that doing so could convinced Circe to save him (I think?)
Edit 2??: some people are saying it was forced, some are saying it wasn’t, some are saying that making it not SA thing was a slightly later version or a mistranslation or something… I don’t know yall
Edit 3: honestly I’m glad some of these people are respectful but yall what is even happening in the replies I’m actually so confused

In greek mythology its such a hit to the gut when reading and realizing the manly heroes arent immune to the depravity of the gods

This makes me wonder, in epic the musical did Odysseus not do things with circe and Calypso? It certainly seems to be implied that way. When circe is trying to get him to do it he refuses her, and Athena says Odysseus has never cheated on his wife in God games which takes place after he's been stuck on Calypso's island for 7 years

If you look up about that. He loved Penelope. He did anything to get back to her. All the other sacrifices in Zeus name during the Trojan war overlook those transgressions and how he continued to devote himself to his family. The Greek God's are master manipulators and seducers. Why else would their have been so many demigods in the stories. Many took advantage of men and women.

I saw someone comment that Odysseus never loved Penelope, and also stated that the Odyssey was not about him loving Penelope, but basically saying that ‘a man is not the same without his home’ which is why he returned to Ithaca. I think this is definitely a big leap, considering that MAJORITY of his thoughts were about PENELOPE, because he loves her. But everyone thinks differently, unfortunately.

Odyssey is always loved Penelope but he unfortunate circumstances let him to getting raped or sexually assaulted. He loved Penelope. He just had no other option in those scenarios because he could’ve been killed.

Exactly. So true. He was so madly in love with penelope, how could ppl think he could possibly cheat? It makes no sense.

Even in the original myths, if you took it by modern standards, Odysseus was coerced by Circe. She threatened to kill crew members. And I don't think I even need to explain Calypso.

In Epic, I think it was confirmed that neither of them forced themselves on Odysseus, just because the creators didn't want it and it wasn't important to the story. He just danced with Circe (arguably hypnotized?) and Calypso "allowed" him to have his own bed...
