Your Cards Remember and Forget Things - Advanced Rulings

Cards have memories for how they were summoned, which work in funny ways. Say a monster was synchro summoned and its sent to the GY. Since it was summoned properly, you can then summon it back with something like Monster Reborn. If its banished(Dark Core), you can bring it back from the banishment. And if its flipped face down(Book of Moon), or removed and returned to the field (World Legacy Clash), it still remembers it was synchro summoned properly. However, if that monster is flipped face down(Book of Moon), and then you flip it back face up, will its effects be negated by Nekroz of Unicore, which negates the effects of monsters special summoned from the extra deck? The answer is actually no, because it was flipped summoned, and monsters only remember the last kind of summon that was done to them. However, if its sent to the GY, it still remembers that it was summoned properly, so you can bring it back with monster reborn, even though its last summon was a flip summon. That causes the card to forget it was summoned from the extra deck, but remember that it was summoned properly from the extra deck.

The only thing more difficult than understanding this fucking game is getting your friends to want to play it.

Im starting to understand why they made an entire school in GX to teach people how to play this game.

As I've always said: The most convoluted aspect of this game isn't what's written on the cards; it's what's NOT written anywhere.

Man ray: Weren't you special summoned from the extra deck?

Patrick: No, i was flip summoned

Man Ray: But you were summoned properly?

Patrick: Yes

Man Ray: And to be summoned properly, you need to be summoned from the extra deck?

Patrick: Yes.

Man ray: So since you were properly special summoned then you were summoned from the extra deck.

Patrick: That makes sense to me.

Man Ray: Then you were special summoned from the extra deck.

Patrick: No, i was flip summoned.

There's also effects that depend on the summoning conditions, too. The Ancient Gear Golem fusion card with 3300 attack (I forgot the name) gains an extra attack for every Ancient Gear Golem used to fusion summon it. That effect goes away if you use a trap card that banishes it until the end phase and brings it back with double attack. Since it's brought back from banishment, it only attacks once.

That reminds me of Skyscraper 2 - Hero City. Once per turn, during your Main Phase you can target 1 Elemental Hero monster in your Graveyard that was destroyed by battle and sent there; special summon that target.
Back in the day, my cousin used to play elemental heroes, and the very few times he would use this card he would make a separate pile next to his graveyard with heroes that were destroyed by battle just so we donā€™t get confused. Eventually, he dropped the card all together but it was definitely the first instance of ā€œremembering detailsā€ came across us

Gotta love the odd and arbitrary way that Yugioh chooses to have the cards function

Basically you gotta treat your extra deck like a date. Being a gentleman with manners, like, opening the car door for them (summon them properly, otherwise they'll be pissed and upset for the rest if the night/date/ DUEL)...

I think Logs forgot to mention that cards specifically remembers they were first summoned. Its literally an effect: "Must First be Special/Fusion Summoned by blah blah blah" for some cards, you cant summon them the usual way, preventing some cards that can cheat them out of the Extra Deck to summon them. Many old Hero Fusion monsters had this.

This is what you get after 20 years of random rulings by OCG judges that then get poorly translated to the TCG
